The things around you can effect how you feel. True!
When you’re working and you feel flat, disinterested, disengaged, or just tired and lacking in energy, stop and take a look around you. Maybe it is your usual place of work, or your desk or table, and you have the same feeling everyday or it maybe this feeling creeps in only occasionally.
Now think about a space where you feel happy. It could be that you can see outside, or see the sunlight or rain, it could be an open space or a warm space with walls filled with book cases and your favorite books, it could be a bright room, or a light white room with white plantation shutters, flowy (is that a word?) curtains or a wonderful view of mountains or the sea or a river. How do you imagine feeling if you had a beautiful view everyday – or when you were working or want to be creative. (because … creativity IS part of running a business)
Your surrounds can create an energy that works for you or against you. I suspect that you want to make the most of every single minute, so by surrounding yourself with the things, or a space that has you feeling good, or even better, has you feeling great, you will be much more productive. In my experience you will have less time feeling stuck and unproductive and you’ll have more time being more productive, feeling creative and happier if you are in a space you love.
Take stock of the things or surrounds that make you feel fabulous. Shift work spaces, or set up your workspace differently by surrounding yourself with the things you treasure. It could be a vision board, positive words, mantras, or photos of family or loved ones, or a completely different room or view.
I’ve noted how I feel when I’m working in different surrounds and it sure as heck makes a difference. I love to see out – remember the cave!! I love to see the weather or better still see water.
This is also something I’m conscious of when I travel. I take with me things that make me happy. It often means I don’t travel as light as I would like, however it can be the difference between being productive or not. I travel with my music, I have music on my iPhone and I also take a Bose speaker that connects by Bluetooth to iTunes on my phone, so I can have the music I like no matter where I am.
I take particular magazines that I purchase routinely at the airport because I know they have me reading content that inspires me when I’m not writing or working on other content. I take a lot of books, yes the real paper ones, hold in my hand type of books, because I find this relaxing or inspirational to read. I take a choice so no matter what I choose I will have what I want.
I’ve been known to be stuck, pack the car and drive to the beach along the Great Ocean Road to Lorne, or to South Australia so I can be on the Murray River to be surrounded by the outdoors I so love. It could be a day trip or longer. If this is what makes me happy then this is what I’ll do.
Life is too short to be in a space, or place you don’t want to be in, or in a space that has you feeling stuck, or not productive. You’ll use so much more energy trying to lift your energy if you’re not where you really want to be.
Start noticing how you feel. Notice what makes your heart sing when you are in a particular place or space or surrounded with the things you love.
